Well, everybody, the History Society Functions Committee welcomes you all. I must say that I am surprised. There are so many people here tonight and so many new faces. Let me say that I believe you have made an excellent decision to attend this meeting. Our speaker tonight will be one of the world′s leading experts on Anglo-Saxon issues. He′s Professor Michael Sutherland, who has kindly consented to come all the way from the University of Essex to speak to us. Professor Sutherland is not only an expert on the Anglo-Saxon period but also one of the most interesting speakers I have ever met. So please welcome Professor Michael Sutherland.
